Week 4: Burnsall Fell Race 2011 AS 1.5m 900ft

Eating the Pain

It might only be a sprint race with 900ft climb, but what's the point of fell running if you can't indulge in the season's highs?

Burnsall is pure adrenalin racing. The incline is a lung bursting legs burning lesson in commitment. After 60 seconds I just wanted to turn back and ensure my first place at the bar of the Red Lion. By the flag at the summit my only thought was "yee hee hee, here we bloody well go sunshine!" The childlike joy of racing down a steep hill trying not to tumble arse over tit is indescribable.

It was won by local runner Ted Mason who by all accounts took a fantastic line on the descent and completely threw the competition with a finishing time of 14:18. I was thrilled with 17:54 in 18th place, an improvement of 80 seconds on last year's time. The results are here.

This week I climbed a modest 4,349 feet in an unspectacular 6 hours 33 minutes. Hill and mile reps are the order of the week with a bit of cross country fartlek thrown into the mix.

I'm starting to think more about an holistic approach to training, but more of that later...

Onwards and upwards!
