Week 1: Coniston Country Fair AM 6m 2,400ft

LIQUID POST-RACE RELIEF

What better way to start my Bob Graham training than with a fell race on my 39th birthday? My performance was lack lustre, and if there was a prize for taking the worst line on the descent then I would have had a strong claim to it. It was a divine day and an education in how much training I have to put in over then next year.

To put my present level of fitness in some context, it took me three days to recover sufficiently to train. Surprisingly I put in a strong leg in the Golden Acre Relay this week, but am saddened that I seem to be sacrificing speed to achieve my dream. Who wouldn't prefer to run quickly?

Never mind about silly road times, this is where the hard hill work begins. From now on my targets are measured in feet climbed and time spent in training. Diet, cross training, stretching and of course rest are all going to be vital to ensuring that come 24th July next year I'm in 'peak tip top' condition.

This week I've climbed 6,274 ft and spent 7hrs 34mins in training.

Heading off to the lakes again now, and looking forward to the Borrowdale race next Saturday thanks to a club mate very generously offering me his place.

Onwards and upwards!
